Retention period of personal data held by the department
Dear Department of Human Services,
I would like to retention period of medicare billing (in paper or electronic format)sent by doctors and hospitals when a person opts for bulk billing services when seeing a doctor at a private clinic or at the emergency department of public hospitals.
Is a history being maintained that person in question has been to a particular clinic/hospital and the services sought or is the information deleted once the claim has been processed? Upon expiry of the retention period, is the information archivedin any form?Is there any other evidence in any form whether electronic or paper including archived copies that seek to establish when the person has used his medicare card to seek medical assistance?if so their complete retention times.
Yours faithfully,
Rodney Malone

Thank you for your prompt reply. I see that the retention period schedule from National archives has been provided as a guide. Would it be possible for the department to identify the retention periods for the documents originally listed in my original request according to National archives retention schedule-as in which documents fall under which category as listed by national arcĥves.
The other thing I would like to know if the there are documents that indicate that a retention period greater than the minimum retention period as per the National archives retention schedule is being subscribed by the department for the documents originally listed or strictly the period precribed by National archives is being adhered to.
Yours sincerely,
Rodney Malone
