The request was successful.

Dear Department of Education,

Good morning,

In Saturday’s edition of ‘The Weekend Australian’ 12 December 2015, a story was written by Natash Bita on ‘VET giants reap $920 million off taxpayers’.

In her story she quoted statistics for VET Fee-Help 2015 to Nov 15 and the source - Federal Education Department. I would like to have access to this statistical report.

Yours faithfully,

Vi

Dear Violet

We refer to your email below seeking access under the Freedom of
Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act) to a copy of the statistical report
referred to in a story written by Ms Natasha Bita in the Weekend
Australian on 12 December 2015. The Department of Education and Training
(the department) has received your FOI request.

Due to high levels of public interest in the action of the government to
reform the VET FEE-HELP loan scheme, the department responded to an
enquiry by Ms Bita by providing a limited subset of the 2015 VET FEE-HELP
payment information available at that point in time. Ms Bita was not
provided with a 2015 VET FEE-HELP statistical report and no such report
has as yet been prepared for 2015 (2015 VET FEE-HELP statistical reports
will be publically available in 2016).

Rather, the information provided to Ms Bita (set out below) covered only a
small number of large providers.

·         The top five 2015 VET FEE-HELP providers listed by advance
payments made up to 15 November 2015 are listed below.

# in list Provider Name Amount paid to

15 November 2015
1 Careers Australia Education Institute Pty Ltd $229,166,188
2 Technical and Further Education Commission NSW $202,272,822
3 ACTE Pty Ltd $198,693,431
4 Study Group Australia Pty Limited $124,482,353
5 Phoenix Institute of Australia Pty Ltd $106,667,172

·         The Australian Institute of Professional Education Pty Ltd has
received $104,166,660 up to 15 November 2015 for VET FEE-HELP

·         Capital Training Institute Pty Ltd has not received payments for
VET FEE-HELP in 2015.

·         Total VET FEE-HELP payments made for 2015 is $2.372 billion (as
at 15 November 2015).  NOTE Reconciliations of the reported student
liabilities and payments will occur in June 2016 (for 2015 data).

·         Attached is the VET FEE-HELP statistics reports for 2011 and
2012 which were published at the time.

We will assume that you are withdrawing your FOI request, noting that we
are happy to provide you with the above and the attached information
outside of the FOI Act. However, please let us know by 4 January 2015 if
this is not the case.

Kind regards

FOI Team
