Dear Mr Clarke,

I refer to your FOI request (FOI 2016/3) dated 29 January 2016 for;

“what developments by the organisation have lead to a resulting profit
(eg. the development of wi-fi.) If possible could you include a list of
all technologies and the cost associated with their development followed
by the total amount of funds returned to the organisation”.

CSIRO, from its’ inception in 1947 (see,
[1]http://www.csiro.au/en/About/History-ach...), has
been involved in developing hundreds, if not thousands of technologies.
Indeed, as of June 2015, CSIRO had 578 patent families (3453 total live
patents world-wide), 313 trade mark families and 114 difference Plant
Breeders Rights’. CSIRO does not have a document, other than our annual
budgets (and annual reports), that encapsulates all these developments and
their resulting profits (or if applicable, losses).  Further, depending on
CSIRO’s commercialisation strategy at the time, CSIRO technologies have
returned varying amounts of profit to the organisation.  For example, a
CSIRO scientist invented Aeroguard, the intellectual property for which
CSIRO gave away for free, according to CSIRO’s policy at the time.

However, for your information, CSIRO’s Annual Reports available at
[2]http://www.csiro.au/en/About/Reports/Ann... contain detailed
budgets; including information in relation to CSIRO’s sources of revenue
(see e.g. page 15 of the CSIRO Annual Report 2014 – 2015) which may be of
use to you. CSIRO’s Annual Reports also include analysis of source of
revenue; for example, co-investment, consulting and services and research
and IP royalty and licence revenues and their detailed financial
statements (see CSIRO Annual Report 2014 – 2015 -  Part 4 Financial
statements which include information on ‘Own-source income’).

I also note, CSIRO’s Annual Reports also captures a snap shot of the
number of CSIRO Inventions, patents etc, for each financial year, see page
30 of CSIRO Annual Report 2014-2015.

CSIRO Annual Reports are publicly available as noted above. Please do not
