DPS Information Requests, Department of Parliamentary Services

Dear Ben

I refer to your request for information about Parlview Enhancements.

DPS' response to your request is as follows:

Can you please provide documents in relation to ParlView, specifically:
• Any approved or rejected plans to replace the current "Adobe Flash" player from Parlview, and the reason for the approval/rejection

The Parlview Adobe Flash player was introduced as part of the new Parlview capability in June 2013.
In response to changing technology trends DPS augmented the Flash player with a Cross Platform Audio and Media Player in the 2014/15 financial year.
The cross platform audio and media player adapts to different screen sizes and utilises native players for Smartphone (Android/iOS) and Tablet (Android/iOS) devices.
The Flash player is still in use for PC and Mac desktop/laptop users, and DPS does not have any approved/rejected plans to replace it on those platforms. Desktop/laptop ParlView users are able to download files at different bitrates in standard MP4 and AAC formats.
DPS does offer HTML5 based streaming on its live webcast service (as distinct from the on-demand ParlView service) available on the APH website, http://www.aph.gov.au/Watch_Read_Listen

• Any correspondence with members of the public in relation to issues with Parlview (including not being able to access content) over the last 6 months.
Analysis of DPS’s service management database identified the following relevant interactions:

Suggested improvements: 1 (adding speakers names for committees names)
Problems with Individual streams: 4
Incorrect Links: 1
Copy of Proceedings: 22
How to: 8
Use of Video: 3
Mobile device access queries: 1
Accessing webcast through MAC: 4

We hope that the above information is of assistance to you.

This information is provided to you in accordance with the DPS Policy on Information Requests.

Please don't hesitate to contact this mailbox if you have any queries or concerns in relation to the above.

Dear DPS Information Requests,

Thanks for responding - slightly unrelated, it would be fantastic if the cross platform media player could be made available to some Desktop users with Flash as a last resort - security and all that :)

Yours sincerely,
