Programming languages and publicly available source code at Geoscience Australia
Dear Geoscience Australia,
I request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act 1982
(1). Any documents detailing the software programming languages used by particular projects or initiatives of Geoscience Australia.
(2). Any documents listing or mentioning software programs or libraries developed by or in conjunction with Geoscience Australia, the source code of which has been made publicly available (whether or not the code was released under a recognised Free Software or Open Source license).
I recognise that it may be necessary to redact or omit documents in relation to projects that have not been publicly announced. This is acceptable, but in the event that this occurs, I further request:
(3). Any documents detailing the number of projects (and if possible the languages they are using) removed from the scope of part (1) of this request due to the project not having been publicly announced, including documents produced during the execution of this request.
I recognise that it may be necessary to redact or omit documents in relation to publicly announced projects of a highly sensitive nature. This is acceptable, but in the event that this occurs, I further request:
(4). Any documents listing the names of the projects removed from the scope of part (1) of this request due to the project being of a highly sensitive nature, including documents produced during the execution of this request.
Yours faithfully,
Fraser Tweedale
Dear Mr Tweedale
We acknowledge receipt of your freedom of information request dated 12 July 2017.
The documents you have requested include:
- documents detailing the software programming languages used by projects or initiatives of Geoscience Australia (GA); and
- documents listing or mentioning software programs or libraries developed by or in conjunction with GA, the source code of which has been made publicly available.
Your request potentially captures thousands of documents due to the large number of projects GA conducts and the range of documents which include the information you have requested.
We gather from your request that you are interested in software programming languages and software programs used by GA. In order to assist you, GA is willing to provide you with a list of the software programming languages and programs commonly used for GA projects and initiatives if you withdraw your FOI request. The information would be released to you upon receipt of your withdrawal of the FOI request.
Please contact [email address] to advise whether you are agreeable to withdrawing your request at your earliest convenience, but no later than 21 July 2017.
Regards
FOI Team

Dear FOI Team,
Thank you for your response.
If you are able to provide a list of the software programming languages and development tools
used at Geoscience Australia, that will satisfy my curiosity with respect to part (1) of my
FOI request, but it would not satisfy part (2) of my request, i.e., for documents
listing or mentioning software programs or libraries developed by or in conjunction with GA, the
source code of which has been made publicly available.
Therefore I am willing to withdraw part (1) of my request (and by extension parts (3)
and (4)) if you will furnish me with a list of programming languages commonly used at
Geoscience Australia, reducing the scope of my request to part (2) only.
Alternatively, if it is administratively expeditious to do so, I could withdraw this FOI
request in entirety and submit a separate request equivalent to part (2) of this request.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Fraser Tweedale
