"MetaData" for Senator George Brandis

The request was refused by Department of Parliamentary Services.

Dear Department of Parliamentary Services,

I request:
- Access to "metadata" held by DPS on the internet usage of
-- Senator George Brandis QC
-- Malcom Turnbull MP

For the last sitting week of the Senate and House of Reps (respectively).

Metadata would include all information on the Internet usage, but not the "content" of the communications. I would assume this includes:
- The date and time that a request was made to a specific site
- The web address of the site

I note the Senator and Minister are willing to legislate for this information be stored for ordinary citizens for a period of time. It would therefore be in the Public Interest to practice what they preach and allow for this information to be released.

Yours faithfully,

Ben Fairless

DPS Information Requests, Department of Parliamentary Services

Dear Ben

We apologise for the delay in responding to your request for information.

DPS manages and provides access to the Parliamentary Computer Network (PCN) for Senators, Members and their staff. The data generated when Senators, Members and their staff use the PCN, including metadata relating to internet usage, constitutes documents and/or information relating to or connected with the work of the Senate and/or the House of Representatives (as relevant). The DPS Information Requests policy provides that such documents are "exempt" from release. As such, the information you have requested will not be provided by DPS.

Kind regards
