GST and income tax
Dear Australian Taxation Office,
Can i deduct the GST that i have paid through out the financial year from my gross income to determine my taxable income.
Yours faithfully,
Paul Pavichievac.
Dear Mr Pavichievac
Thank you for your email dated 30 June 2015, which is reproduced below. I also note your identical email dated 19 June 2015. My apologies for our delay in responding.
I am writing to advise you that I don't think that FOI is the best way for you to get the information you need as you appear to be seeking advice, rather than access to documents. Additionally, I do not consider that your email constitutes a valid Freedom of Information (FOI) request for the purposes of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). Specifically, I do not consider that your request provides enough information to enable me to identify documents you are seeking access to (and so is not a valid FOI request under section 15(2) of the FOI Act).
The FOI Act is not intended as an avenue for seeking legal advice on specific issues. If you require advice on specific issues, you may wish to consult with a lawyer or tax agent. If you have specific questions about your taxation affairs, I suggest you contact the ATO by phone or in person (see https://www.ato.gov.au/About-ATO/About-u... for details) or by writing to us at Australian Taxation Office, GPO Box 9990 in your capital city.
If you would like access to general information about the GST and how it works, I suggest you visit the ATO website.
- General information about the GST is available at https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/
- An illustration of how GST works is available at https://www.ato.gov.au/uploadedFiles/Con...
- A series of videos on tax basics for small business is available at https://www.ato.gov.au/business/starting...
Finally, if you have any questions about FOI at the ATO, or if you would like assistance formulating a valid FOI request, please feel free to contact me directly.
Kind regards,
Jordan
