ARPANSA FOI, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency

Dear Jake Gerlach,

We refer to your email dated 6 May 2024 requesting access to documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act).

Your FOI request was as follows: Pursuant to the FOl Act 1982 (Cth) requested is all records regarding breaches by ANSTO of their radioactivity license in relation to technetium.

As you have not responded advising that the publicly available documents on ARPANSA's website satisfies your request, we are writing to advise that we are processing your request as it stands.

We are advised by the Regulatory Services Branch that only a small number of ANSTO facilities directly work with technetium. We are searching for documents that relate to breaches directly involving technetium.

If this is not what you intended within the scope of your request, you can submit another FOI request (and withdraw this current request if relevant), that comprises a refined scope. For example, in your FOI request, ARPANSA would appreciate if you could include a date range, which specific source or facility licence (if known) and the types of documents requested (e.g. all correspondence between ARPANSA and ANSTO). Please try to be as detailed as possible.

This will assist ARPANSA in processing the request and finding the documents that you are specifically after.

In addition, are you agreeable for ARPANSA to redact names and personal details of non-SES staff in the requested documents? Information such as the names and contact details of non-SES staff that is considered irrelevant to a request can be redacted under section 22 of the FOI Act.

If you would like to discuss this further with us, please call 1800 022 333 and ask for the FOI team. Or you can contact us via email at [ARPANSA request email].

We can assist you in refining the scope of your request to the exact documents you are after (if they exist). Otherwise, we will continue to process this FOI request as required by the FOI Act.

Thank you for considering the above.

Kind regards,

FOI Team

Dear ARPANSA FOI,

Thank you for your email.

I am happy for names and other personal details not being supplied.

Please accept limitation of my request to any breaches that have resulted in communication between ANSTO and ARPANSA and those that relate to Tech 99 only and not Tech m.

Yours sincerely,

Jake Gerlach
