Dear Australian Bureau of Statistics,
This is a Freedom of Information Request for the purposes of the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
I request access to the Style Guides/Brand Guides/Writing Guides currently used for the Australian Bureau of Statistics
Yours faithfully,
Alex Pentland
Dear Alex,
I refer to your application in which you seek access to documents under
the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act)(ABS reference FOI 202324/03)
regarding:
"I request access to the Style Guides/Brand Guides/Writing Guides
currently used for the Australian Bureau of Statistics"
Your request was received by the ABS on 26/08/2023 and the 30 day
statutory period for processing your request commenced from the day after
that date.
Before I commence processing your request can you please confirm the
following via return e-mail:
1. Whether your request is only seeking the Style/Brand/Writing guides
which are corporately supported and used by the ABS;
2. Whether you agree to the names and contact details of non-Senior
Executive public servants, and the mobile phone numbers of Senior
Executive public servants being excluded from the scope of this request;
and
3. Where there are a number of drafts of a document, whether you are
seeking access to those drafts, or only the final version of documents
(this includes the latest version where no 'final' version was issued).
It is ABS policy to impose charges consistent with section 29 of the
FOI Act. We we will inform you of our decision in this respect once we
have conducted a search for documents.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns
regarding this email.
Kind regards
Angalea Turnbull

Dear Alex,
We are currently processing your FOI request.
Upon consideration of your request the ABS is of the view that your
request will take longer than 30 days to process. Pursuant to section 15AA
of the Freedom of Information Act, we seek your approval for a 30 day
extension of time. This will enable us to collaborate further with the ABS
line areas and ensure a thorough search has been taken for all documents
within the scope of your request.
If you agree, the new due date for your request will be 25 October
2023. However, the ABS will endeavour to finalise your request before this
date.
We would appreciate your response by COB Wednesday 20 September.
Kind regards,
Adam

AUD118.00 to process a request for a style guide? And Deborah Wallace of the Legislative Compliance and Parliamentary Branch of the ABS states that there is no guarantee that the style guide will not be redacted.
That is obscene.
Good afternoon,
Please see attached a decision letter in regards to your FOI request. We
have attempted to send through the documents in relation to the request,
however we have received an error message due to the Right to Know servers
file size limit. Do you have an alternate email address we can send
through the documents pack to you?
(See attached file: ABS Response to your FOI Request Decision Letter.pdf)

Adam

Dear Adam Horrigan,
Thank you for your message.
My personal email, should RightToKnow permit me to publish it, is [email address]. If you could send the files there, that would be appreciated (and I may be able to upload them later to RightToKnow as a note should I get the chance.
If the email doesn’t show up in the reply due to RightToKnow’s privacy policy, I’ll send a seperate email to the ABS clarifying that it’s me and we’ll send it from there.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Pentland

WTF. $100 for their style guide? No freaking way. That is such BS. I would be challenging that immediately.
