Stamp duty on imported motorcycles
Dear Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads,
I request by means of an FOI,
recently I registered two motorcycles that I brought with me from the UK as part of my personal effects, the two bikes I had owned for a number of years.
My question is why did I have to pay a stamp duty on vehicles I already owned?
I asked this question at the time and was not satisfied with the response.
Yours faithfully,
Stephen Harrison

Could you please advise whether you consent for your email to be forwarded to the Customer Services Operations Team of the department.
Alternatively, please confirm that you wish your request to be considered as an access application under the IP Act or RTI Act.

Dear Ms Harrison
Thank you for contacting the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR)
about stamp duty payments.
TMR advise you are required to pay vehicle registration duty for each
vehicle that is newly registered or transferred into your name, unless
[1]exempt.
An exemption from the requirement to pay stamp duty applies where a
vehicle is being transferred as a gift to a family member or relative.
This means the vehicle is not sold for any amount of money. This exemption
does not apply to transfers between siblings, people related by marriage
(apart from spouses), aunts or uncles. The term 'spouse' includes a de
facto spouse or registered partner under the [2]Civil Partnerships Act
2011.
TMR collects stamp duty on behalf of the Office of State Revenue (OSR).
Duty (Stamp duty) is a tax imposed under the Duties Act 2001 which TMR
collect on behalf of the Office of State Revenue (OSR).
For further information about the payment of Duty and/or to determine if a
stamp duty exemption can be granted, TMR recommend you contact OSR
directly on telephone 1300 300 734 or you may complete an [3]online
enquiry.
If you require further information or assistance you are encouraged to
contact TMR on telephone 13 23 80 between 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday
or via our [4]messaging service accessible on our website.
A Client Relations Consultant will be happy to assist with your enquiry.
Yours sincerely
Yasmara
