Dear Mr Small

Your request has been forwarded to the Australian Sports Commission (ASC)
by the Dept. of Health as it relates to sport in schools.

The ASC has for many years created or supported a number of initiatives to
increase participation by children within sport.

From 2005 until 2014 the ASC ran a programme entitled AASC (Active
After-school Communities) (see [1]website archive for details). This
programme sought  to engage primary school-aged children in free
structured physical activity programmes in the after-school timeslot at
over 3200 schools and out of school hours care services across Australia.

Starting in 2015, our current programme is called Sporting Schools
([2]https://www.sportingschools.gov.au).  This Australian Government
initiative is designed to help schools to increase children’s
participation in sport, and to connect children with community sport. It
is a partnership between the ASC, National Sporting Organisations and
currently over 5,000 primary schools.

Using just these two examples, you can see that the ASC would have very
many documents relating to sport in schools. A formal requirement of
making an FOI request is that the request must provide such information as
is reasonably necessary to enable a responsible officer of the agency to
identify the document that is requested (section 15(2)(b) of the Act).
Additionally, a request that is too broad would also have to be refused as
the work involved in processing your request in its current form would
substantially and unreasonably divert the resources of this agency from
its other operations due to its  size and scope. This is called a
‘practical refusal reason’ (section 24AA of the Act).

Before I can accept your request therefore, I will need from you a  much
narrower definition of the information you are seeking in relation to
sport in schools and some clarification and definition as to what
particular document or documents you require.

I am willing to assist you in composing a valid FOI request. I can be
contacted on any of the contact details below. Please note that if I do
not receive any communication from you on this matter within 30 days, your
request will be considered withdrawn.

Kind regards
