Internet filtering
Dear Australian National University,
Can you tell me what software you use for internet filtering? Can you tell me what your policies are?
Yours faithfully,
Abdul Hai
Dear Mr Hai
Regarding your attached Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the University.
Your request, as it stands, cannot be accepted by the University as it does not identify the documents that you are seeking access to. I suggest that you forward your enquiry to the University's IT Security Unit, via the email address [email address], who may be able to assist you.
Regarding University's policies. The University's policies, standards, procedures, guidelines and forms can be viewed at the University Policy Library webpage. https://policies.anu.edu.au/ppl/index.htm.
Yours sincerely,
David Brumby

Dear Australian National University,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Australian National University's handling of my FOI request 'Internet filtering'.
I believe the university is been unreasonable as I have said what documents I want.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.righttoknow.org.au/request/i...

Abdul Hai
Dear Mr Hai
Regarding your request received on 4 March 2018 by the University where you stated:
* Can you tell me what software you use for internet filtering?
* Can you tell me what your policies are?
Your request appeared to be a request for information rather than an FOI request as you had asked the University to "tell you" what software the University uses and "tell you" what policies of the University are. As such, I referred you to the University's IT Security Unit who may have been able to tell you what internet filtering software is used by the University. I also referred you to the policies library website of the University that contains the University's policies, standards, procedures, guidelines and forms.
You also did not state that you were requesting access to documents under the FOI Act and you did not clearly identify the documents that you are seeking access to. As a result, your request, as it stands, does not provide such information as is reasonably necessary to enable a responsible officer to identify the document(s) requested, as is required by section 15(2)(b) of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act).
A failure to comply with this section 15(2)(b) of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) is classified as a ‘practical refusal reason’ for which a ‘request consultation process’ under the FOI Act is required.
However, in an effort to informally resolve this failure, I request that you refine the scope of your request and provide all necessary information to locate the document(s) you are requesting access to such as:
* Are you only requesting access to a document(s) containing to the title of the internet filtering software used by the University or a document(s) also containing other related information such as the software version number and name of the software supplier
* Are you requesting access to information contained within a single document or more than one document
* What type of document(s) are you requiring access to e.g. email messages
I also request that you advise me if you are still requesting access to the policies of the University and if so the name of those policy documents.
If you have any questions regarding your request, please feel free to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
David Brumby
