Hospital spending for lat 5 financial year (FY11/12 - FY15/16)
Dear Australian Institute of Health and Welfare,
If possible, please treat this as an administrative or informal request. Otherwise, please consider this a request under the FOI Act.
Could you please provide data (spreadsheet if possible) on: hospital recurrent or operational expenditure; and separately, capital expenditure for each of the last 5 financial years for each HHS or hospital in Australia (public and private if you have the data).
I am trying to understand trends of spend and activity for each hospital over time.
Yours faithfully,
Roy Elliot

Dear Gary,
Hospital and Health Services (HHS) are the bodies that run hospitals and health services according to a geographical area.
For example, Central Queensland HHS has the following constituent hospitals/services:
Baralaba Multipurpose Health Service
Biloela Hospital
Blackwater Multipurpose Health Service
Blood Borne Viruses and Sexual Health
Capricorn Coast Hospital and Health Service
Emerald Hospital
Gladstone Hospital
Moura Hospital
Mount Morgan Multipurpose Health Service
Rockhampton Hospital
Springsure Multipurpose Health Service
Theodore Multipurpose Health Service
Woorabinda Multipurpose Health Service
Central Queensland Rural Outpatient Clinics

In terms of the data requested I had assumed that it would be aggregated/reported to this level. Please let me know if this is the level of granularity that your office may have data available at. If it is more granular then that is great and would provide more insight. Thanks for looking into this and please let me know if you need any additional clarifications.
Yours sincerely,
Roy Elliot
Hi Roy

Dear Roy
I have spoken with the various relevant data custodians at AIHW. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
We hold information on recurrent expenditure for public hospitals (and capital expenditure also - but those data
are generally not released for data quality reasons). We hold some expenditure information in relation to Local Hospital Networks. We do not hold data for private hospitals. The Australian Bureau of Statistics holds information on private hospital resourcing.
For hospitals and LHNs, these data are not published by individual establishments so are not readily available. Aggregated data are published in the Hospital resources: Australian hospital statistics report see link below for latest report.
We generally deal with requests of this nature through our customised data analysis service, for which charges would apply. This is consistent with s 12(1) of the FOI Act. As the data requested is for individual establishments, the data would need to be cleared by state and territory data custodians before provision and we cannot guarantee that approval.
Please let me know how you want to proceed.
