Gambling promotion on free to air tv
Dear Queensland Responsible Gambling Advisory Committee,
I am very concerned about the level of advertising currently being pushed on free to air television promoting sports betting services.
It is well known that Australia has one of the worst gambling addictions in the world including one of the highest rates of pokies per capita and an addiction to sports betting. While the Government constantly portrays concern about the issue and its detrimental effect on families and individuals, it seems that nothing is being done to reign in the overwhelming level of betting aps being promoted today.
From celebrity endorsement to 'funny' ads, the frequency of gambling app advertising seems to be ever increasing with numerous providers pushing their products all hours of the day right from the morning show time slots through to late night viewing. Whilst I understand these companies have the right to advertise, it's clear that allowing such high frequency advertising (with nothing but a speedy spoken warning or micro text directing one to 'gamble responsibly') is extremely irresponsible and contradictory in light of the government and community awareness of the problems gambling causes.
Now, as the carefully driven 'cost of living crisis' progresses and Australia continues to grow as the embarrassing world leader in gambling addiction, it is high time for the Government to take some real action and place restrictions on gambling apps and advertising... or perhaps it's not in their best interest to do so since the industry (just like the cigarette and alcohol industry) is so profitable for them.
Yours faithfully,
Johnathan Burns
