Dear Local Council,

Can you please provide me with the number of food safety inspections carried out in your area annually, for the last three years?

How many warning were issued each year and how many fines each year?

What percentage of all food outlets did the council inspect each year?

Have any outlets been shut down for non-compliance and if so what for and how many?

What were the worst offences/biggest fines for each year?

Yours faithfully,

Nigel Gladstone

Nigel Gladstone

Dear Chris Galletti,

This request is very simple as all the information I am asking for is contained in an annual report all councils provide to the NSW food Authority. The food authority send an email form each year and it is emailed back to them. Lane Cove council had it in their document management system but if you do not you can request it from the food authority and they will email it back to you. It took about ten minutes to collate the information I am asking for according to other councils.

The Food authority will not release the forms as it is third party information so I have to request it from all councils individually. I have already received this information from several councils without the need for a GIPA or any paperwork as it is an informal request.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Gladstone

Chris Galletti, Ku-ring-gai Council

Nigel thank you for response, the information contained in my original email to you remains as advised.

Dear Chris Galletti,

I have received this information from a dozen or more councils already without filing out a form. It is disappointing you are forcing me to add paperwork to what is a very simple request that has taken just a few minutes for other councils to help me with.

Do you need the email for the Food Authority contact? He is very helpful and will send you the forms I am requesting, it won't take more than 15 minutes according to other councils.

If you are still requiring me to fill in a form please let me know.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Gladstone

Dear Chris Galletti,

I am not going to pay $30 for information that is readily available from the food authority if you send them an email.

Other councils have told me it takes about ten minutes work to put the information together and as I pointed out earlier this information has been freely provided to me by more than a dozen other councils already.

This is an informal request, which I have tried to assist you with.

If you decide that you wish to charge for access to this information you should be aware that I am a journalist who intends to write a story about my experience asking for public information and you are the first council to insist on charging a fee for access to it.

I hope you can reconsider your position. If not please advise me how much time you have assessed this request will take.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Gladstone

Nigel Gladstone

Dear Chris Galletti,

Thanks for providing the information without the need for a GIPA.

For consistency, I have put the improvement notices in as fines, as they come with a fee and I am treating the name and shame fines as a separate item.

Council Year Inspections Percentage Warnings Issued   Fines
Ku-ring-gai Council 2013/2014 661 100% 71 22
Ku-ring-gai Council 2014/2015 436 100% 79 21
Ku-ring-gai Council 2015/2016 507 100% 70 49

Thanks again.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Gladstone
