Food safety inspections for the years 2014, 2015, 2016
Dear Local Council,
Can you please provide me with the number of food safety inspections carried out in your area annually, for the last three years?
How many warning were issued each year and how many fines each year?
What percentage of all food outlets did the council inspect each year?
Have any outlets been shut down for non-compliance and if so what for and how many?
What were the worst offences/biggest fines for each year?
Yours faithfully,
Nigel Gladstone

Hi Nigel, the following is for your background. Happy to provide a
statement, if required.
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|Year |Food outlets |Inspections |Warnings |Fines |Closures |
|--------+---------------+--------------+-----------+--------+-----------|
|14/15 |1,440 |2,096 |553 |173 |27 |
|--------+---------------+--------------+-----------+--------+-----------|
|15/16 |1,540 |1,910 |588 |105 |15 |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
All food outlets are inspected at least once each year.
The maximum fine that can be issued, under the Food Act 2003 and Food
Regulation 2015, is $880 per breach for companies and $440 for
individuals.
Reasons for closures vary but generally it’s for non-compliance after
warnings are given. As you can see, there has been a significant drop in
fines and closures due to the success of our education campaign (this
includes free workshops based on safe food handling).

Dear Paul,
Thanks for this information, do you have the numbers for 2013/14, as I asked fo 3 years?
Also how many Formal Improvement notices were issued?
As I am trying to collate the information from 150 sources - all from the same forms sent to the food authority - I need to have consistent data and that includes the reporting of venues inspected as a percentage. The report I refer to uses the number of High to medium risk outlets and then the number of those inspected. From these, a number as a percentage of inspections can be derived. The number you have sent has more inspections than venues so it's not very useful.
I hope this makes my request clearer and if it's too hard I'm happy to get the numbers out of the reports if you send those.
Yours sincerely,
Nigel Gladstone
Nigel, the number of outlets is broken down into three categories. You can't remove temporary outlets, for example, in any particular year. They too need to be inspected. The reason why our inspections outnumber the number of outlets is because some are inspected more than once due to a warning having been given, and or a fine.
To simplify, our inspection rate is, at the very least, 100% every year.
I will attempt to provide the 13/14 data tomorrow.

Dear Paul,
The forms sent to the food authority do remove temporary outlets and are very specific when asking in Q16. "Number of high and medium risk, fixed premises food businesses inspected? *
Q1 and Q2 give you the Total Number of High-Risk and Med-Risk Fixed Premises.
These are the numbers I want and I'm happy to extract them from the forms as I have done from many other councils to save your staff some time.
Can you also please tell me how many Formal Improvement notices were issued each year?
Yours sincerely,
Nigel Gladstone
