Conditions that Code Club Australia needed to meet to receive $500,000 grant from Department of Education.

Steve MacDonald

Dear Department of Education,

I note in a post on Senator Birmingham's website (linked below) that Code Club Australia received a $500,000 commitment from the Federal Government to expand their programme.

I am delighted by this news, as I agree entirely with initiatives to increase STEM skills in our students. I would like to know what conditions or requirements the management and board of Code Club Australia were required to satisfy before this grant was awarded, and what results or targets they are required to provide to ensure the programme is progressing as planned and the money is being used effectively.

Education - FOI, Department of Education

Dear Mr MacDonald

Thank you for your email request of 15 July 2016 in which you requested
information about the:

‘conditions or requirements the management and board of Code Club
Australia were required to satisfy before this grant was awarded, and what
results or targets they are required to provide to ensure the programme is
progressing as planned and the money is being used effectively’.

We have discussed your request for information with the Learning Area
Support Team in the department and they are happy to provide you with the
following information:

•             Code Club Australia was granted a one-off/ad hoc grant to
support the expansion of their initiative into schools with a focus on
areas of low SES or disadvantage, which have been identified as an area of
greatest need.  The Australian Government grant matched the Telstra’s
Foundations contribution to Code Club Australia.

•             The Code Club Australia grant has deliverables (which
includes targets) and milestones that must be met to ensure compliance
with the one-off/ad hoc grant. These milestones include project plans,
agreed budget and progress reports. Code Club Australia is subject to the
same compliance regulations as any organisation entering into a grant or
contract arrangement with the Australian Government.

We note that under section 15(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 1982
(the FOI Act) in order to make a valid FOI request an applicant must
provide sufficient information about the documents sought. In this case
you have sought information as opposed to specific documents and therefore
we have dealt with your request outside of the FOI Act, by providing the
information above. If, however, you would like to make a request for
documents under the FOI Act, please let us know.

Regards

FOI Team

Department of Education and Training
