Dear Stephen Proust,
On 3 July 2024, the Australian National University received your request seeking access to
documents under the
Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the Act)
as follows:
‘In a quote to RiotAct yesterday, your spokesperson referred to: In the last 12 months alone, the
university has completed 244 corrective or reactive maintenance work orders at a cost of almost
$1 mil ion across the four heritage buildings where the childcare centres are based.
(See https://the-riotact.com/anu-under-federa. .). I request access to both any document, list or
database that lists those corrective or reactive maintenance work orders, including the dates and
value of that maintenance work’
I, Kathryn Dan, am an officer authorised under section 23(1) of the FOI Act to make decisions in
relation to FOI requests.
On 25 July 2024, The University contacted you and requested an extension of time under section
15AA of the Act. Your response was received the same day, where you advised that you did not
agree to the extension.
On 1 August 2024, the University contacted you and advised you that a practical refusal existed in
relation to your request and on that basis, I intended to refuse your request. The practical refusal
reason was that the work involved in processing your request in its current form would

substantial y and unreasonably divert the resources of this agency from its other operations. You
were also advised of the request consultation process where you were able to revise your request
to a more manageable form by reducing or narrowing the scope of your request in order to remove
the reasons for the practical refusal.
As no further correspondence has been received from you since 1 August 2024, the reasons for the
Practical Refusal have not been removed.
In accordance with section 24AB(6) of the Act, before the end of the consultation period you were
required to do one of the following, in writing:
• make a revised request that suitably removed the practical refusal reason;
• tell us that you did not wish to revise the request; or
• withdraw the request.
As you have not revised your request to an extent which removes the practical refusal reason and
have not otherwise advised the University in accordance with section 24AB(6), your request is now
taken to have been withdrawn.
Your review rights are outlined on the following page.
Yours sincerely
